Outback Performance

Performance

Bulit for the great outdoors

Restless for adventure from the ground up, the Subaru Outback draws on the inherent sure-footed dynamics of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and the rigid Subaru Global Platform for the ultimate in driving confidence and unbridled fun. At its core, the horizontally-opposed Boxer engine delivers a balanced drive with a low centre of gravity, enhancing stability and control across all terrains. With an impressive 213mm ground clearance7, and the terrain-taming X-Mode, hidden camping spots can be reached effortlessly. Meanwhile, the openness of the great outdoors is mirrored by ingenious interior space and outstanding versatility.

AWD

The sign of a true performer is good balance. And when it comes to driving a Subaru, superior balance equals superior vehicle control. That’s why Subaru has built its reputation on its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system and a symmetrical drivetrain that deliver an innate sense of balance from the ground up. Symmetrical AWD delivers engine power to all four wheels simultaneously. Distributing power across all four wheels - rather than two on conventional wheels - gives you twice the traction capacity. So, under acceleration, there’s more grip for cornering and more capacity to keep on track through the corners.

Ultimately, having the driving force spread across all four wheels means greater control and confidence under most conditions. The traction and control delivered by Symmetrical AWD is further enhanced by the Outback’s suspension. The wide track, rigid front suspension produces more responsive steering and cornering, while the double wishbone rear suspension ensures a smooth, controlled ride with outstanding handling, comfort and quietness. For you, the driver, it all adds up to an agile and responsive vehicle with optimum balance, control and confidence in a variety of driving conditions.

Boxer Engine

Consistent across the Subaru Outback range is the famous Subaru Boxer engine, designed to sit lower and flatter in the engine bay than traditional engines. Due to this unique design, it delivers less noise and vibration to the cabin, while the lower centre of gravity improves stability, cornering and traction with the road. Coupled with Subaru symmetrical drivetrain, this configuration delivers superior handling confidence, better balance, smoothness and ultimately, outstanding driver enjoyment.

Subaru Outback drivers can enjoy the smooth, latest generation Subaru 2.5-litre direct injection engine which delivers responsiveness, and sporty on-road performance. For those wanting more grunt to power their adventures, can choose the new 2.4-litre turbocharged Boxer engine which drives the Subaru Outback AWD Sport XT and Outback AWD Touring XT.

The Subaru EyeSight® Driver Assist system uses cameras and radar sensors – positioned at the front, side and rear of the vehicle – to support a host of primary functions and advanced intelligent features that help avoid potential collisions.

Autonomous Emergency Steering

Autonomous Emergency Steering

To help avoid collisions, this function can assume automatic steering control to take evasive action in situations where it is safe and suitable space is available.

Speed Sign Recognition

Speed Sign Recognition

The vehicle's cameras recognise speed limit signs and display the speed limit on the Multi-Information Display, enabling the driver to easily recognise the speed limit - even if they’ve missed the road sign.

Lane Centring Function

Lane Centring Function

By identifying the road lane markings, the Lane Centring Function uses steering assistance, along with accelerator and brake functions, to help maintain the vehicle’s position near the centre of the lane.

Pre-Collision Brake Assist

Pre-Collision Brake Assist

If the risk of a collision is detected in front of the vehicle, this feature automatically applies maximum braking assistance to help the driver slow down or come to a complete stop.

Safety Systems

Subaru's Vision Assist

Subaru's Vision Assist is advanced technology that gives you greater awareness of the world around you.

Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB)

Detects obstacles behind you and alerts you when there’s a risk of collision. Plus, it can even step in to apply the brakes in the event that you don’t.

Blind Spot Monitor (BSM)

Features sensors that let you know when there’s something in your blind spots to help make lane changes safer.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)

Distraction warning

Subaru DMS21 recognises that at times the driver may be distracted, which is why a buzzer alert and visual display will warn the driver if their gaze continues to wander outside a set range.

Dozing or drowsiness warning

The DMS22 uses near infrared LEDs and a camera to observe the driver’s eyes and recognise when their attention is waning or if they start to fall to sleep. An alert can warn them, and give a gentle reminder to refocus on the road ahead or take a break if necessary.

Facial recognition

The intelligent facial recognition system can identify up to five separate drivers and then automatically personalise the cabin to their preferences - adjusting a range of settings including the climate control and Multi-Information Display (MID) screen.

Safety Systems

Subaru Driver Monitoring System14

Watching out for you, this innovative system monitors the driver’s face for signs of fatigue or distraction and provides both audible and visual warning.

It's also clever enough to recognise the faces of up to five registered drivers, automatically syncing each driver’s personal settings - including air con, seat position, and door mirror angles.

Safety Hero

Safety Designs

Subaru Global Platform

Safety starts with an improved chassis and a body frame reinforced to increase frontal, side and rear crash safety. Designated crumple zones are designed to direct impact energy away from the reinforced passenger safety cell, while SRS23 airbags – including dual front, dual front side, dual curtain, driver's knee, and front passenger seat cushion are designed to protect occupants. The Boxer engine sits low in the engine bay and is designed to help protect occupants by sliding below the cabin - not into it - in the event of a severe frontal collision.
